2015 April ~ Sun Street Festival; High Street gets the rhythm at Sun Street Festival for Youth Week

The Sun Street Festival in Maitland is on Friday as part of Youth Week celebrations.

High Street Maitland will be transformed for the music event, which is the first of its kind for Youth Week.

“We are expecting between 300 and 500 people,” Maitland youth development officer Bron Dyason said.

“This year there is a lot of variety of music and lots of great activities.”

The new Sun Street Studios in the iconic Royal Theatre will have two stages inside and one outside.

Lanterns and synthetic turf have been brought in to decorate the outdoor stage to create a relaxed area for acoustic chill music.

Inside the venue will be everything from rock, to rhythm and blues.

There will be market stalls and a photo booth, as well as henna and temporary tattoos and a silent disco.

For those who haven’t been to a silent disco, it involves putting on a set of headphones and tuning in to one of the music channels provided.

It means everyone can jam together while listening to their favourite genre of music.

Street artist Shane Tunz from Up & Up worked with young people in the lead-up to the festival to create a mural on the side of the Sun Street Studios building.

He will be at the event to talk about street art and teach street drawing.

There will also be a design and paint workshop to decorate surfboards and skateboards.

“Come and celebrate a good night and have some fun in the school holidays,” Ms Dyason said.

The Sun Street Festival runs from 4pm to 10pm.
