The Bands
THE LOOP ORCHESTRA

Formed around 1982, while experimenting with radio programming on 2mbs fm, The Loop Orchestra was initially a group of humans operating tape machines – each person/machine/loop being responsible for a certain section (brass/strings etc.) of a musical piece, put together in real time to create the experience of an even larger ensemble. Over time, they have perhaps moved more into “a study of pure sound”, still using the same tools – with a film buff’s attention to detail and influence. The End Of Maitland is proud to present this very important Australian group as the final musical act of a festival that has both feet firmly planted in a commitment to film and music.

MAGDOUGALL / GUERRA
Mary Macdougall and Anthony Guerra are two artists that have covered much ground during their time in the open – in groups such as YOUR INTESTINES, THE BOWLES, LOVE CHANTS and WARM CURRENCY for example… in many, many collarborations, with visual art, free improvisation, design and more. Their attention to beauty, experimentation and the absurd is unique – few humans tread this delicate line between songwriting & chaos, light and dark, the avant garde and pop music. Their music is intimate, challenging and gorgeous. Much like the humans creating the sounds. A very special one-off performance, for attendees of The End Of Maitland only.

ABSURD COSMOS LATE NITE
The name truly does give one a clue as to where we’re at, but for a little more context – ACLN is a strange trip to somewhere in Australia most of us have experience with, yet (if you’re lucky) only in dreams we barely understand. Or perhaps our inner dialogue, set to an uneasy meter, critiquing and discussing, over and again. Mark Groves has been an active member of, and an inspiration for underground Australian musicians and punters for a couple of decades – many bands, labels, gigs and collaborations would not exist without his committment, drive and time. In summary (perhaps) of ABSURD COSMOS LATE NITE: “Imagine Scott Walker fired by Macquarie Group.”

ALZHEIMER BLANKS
AB’s is two people with the same brain, separated by state lines, operating 4 samplers with no sync – sans grid. Electronic music that nods in recognition of everything else they’ve heard not filtered through a DI unit. And film worship. Making a square peg fit in a round hole. Humid, psychedelic trance music (not the genre) with a healthy dose of absurdity.

oOoOoze
A mainstay of Newcastle’s experimental music scene for years, Jack & Jamey have continually challenged themselves, their collaborators and audiences with performances that are truly one-off experiences – no two gigs are even vaguely alike. Their influences are too vast to list, but they seamlessly mix up a soup of the avant garde, dance, jazz, folk and more that draw the listener into their world. A seduction perhaps. In what is quite possibly the group’s final performance ever – oOoOoze will be opening the last musical missive of The End Of Maitland. An honour for us and you also.
